There are four main island groups within Tonga. From the south they is the main island of Tongatapu, the Ha'apai Islands, Vava'u and the Niuas in the far north. All island groups provide accommodation for holidaymakers looking for a relaxing break, though this is limited on the Niuas due to its remote location.

• The capital of Tonga is Nuku'alofa, located on the island of Tongatapu.
• Tongans are a very religious people. Be aware that on Sundays, business and most activities close. On resorts, however, one can still enjoy the various guest services.
• Airlines flying into Tonga include Air Pacific, Air New Zealand, Polynesian Airlines and Air Fiji. Chatham's Pacific is the local domestic airline, with regular flights to the other island groups of Tonga.
• Tonga was the only island nation in the South Pacific not to be colonised. As such it retains a strong link with its cultural heritage.
• Visitors wishing to get married in Tonga need to apply for permission with the Immigration Dept in Tonga. It is best to check with your resort or hotel requiring the legal requirements.
